Ceramic Tile
An attractive material for any room in your home, ceramic tile is ideally suited for entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and other areas prone to heavy traffic or exposure to dirt and moisture. Naturally resistant to chemical and biological agents, ceramic tile surfaces also reduce the presence of dust mites and fungi and ceramic tile require little more than a damp cloth to clean dirty or greasy surfaces.
Being available in a vast array of colors, patterns, finishes and sizes, ceramic tile has the design flexibility to indulge any interior designer while offering the durability to stand up to the high demands of heavy foot traffic. For ages strength and style have made ceramic tile a great choice for flooring material.
Generally made from red or white clay fired in a kiln “Ceramic” or non-porcelain tiles are almost always finished with a durable glaze which carries the color and pattern. Used in both wall tile and floor tile applications, these tiles are softer and easier to cut than porcelain, and usually carry a PEI from 0 to 3 rating. Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are usually suitable for light to moderate traffic and generally have a relatively high water absorption rating, making them less frost resistant and more prone to wear and chipping than porcelain tiles.
Generally made by the dust pressed method from porcelain clays, Porcelain tile is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth, with a sharply formed face. Porcelain tiles usually have a much lower water absorption rate than non-porcelain tiles making them frost resistant or frost-proof. Glazed porcelain tiles are much harder and more wear and damage resistant than non-porcelain ceramic tiles, making them suitable for light traffic to the heaviest residential and light commercial traffic. Full body porcelain tiles carry the color and pattern through the entire thickness of the tile making them virtually impervious to wear. Porcelain tiles are available in matte, unglazed or a high polished finish.
