Florida Floor Tiler’s Labor Day

labor-dayLabor Day for a Florida Floor Tiler.

Labor Day, the first Monday of September, has about as much significance for the majority of working Americans as ground hog day. If you are a floor tiler in Florida and working this day, consider yourself lucky. The original intent of the official holiday was, according to mythology, to recognize the accomplishments of the American worker.

Now, Labor Day is a federal holiday. All Government offices, schools and organizations are closed. In Florida that represent about 15% of its working population. Florida has never been highly unionized, so few large businesses consider it good practice to pay employees for not working.

As an independent tiler of ceramic, marble and stone, I find the idea of being paid to not produce a product amusing. This Labor Day is no different than any other work day; an opportunity to set tile and make a living.
